Active Parenting classes will help you to: better understand your developing child, know what to expect at each age and stage, and effectively use a variety of discipline strategies to improve family life and decrease your stress. You will learn why children “misbehave” and how to redirect them in a loving and constructive way. The course is facilitated by Michele Gordon, Parent Connection Coordinator and Cuesta College Child Development Instructor.
Each session meets for three consecutive Friday mornings. Parents will receive a completion certificate at the end of the third class.

Baby Steps: Promoting Healthy Beginnings
Baby Steps is a peer-led educational program that provides a safe environment for pregnant and first-time mothers to discuss topics regarding pregnancy and parenting. The course encourages partners to attend and learn more about their transition into parenthood.

Baby Proofing Your Home
Baby-proofing your home is one of the most important things you can do for your newborn. In this class facilitated by retired Health Education Assistant at the San Luis Obispo County Health Dept., you will learn standard safety precautions and tips to create a child-safe home. Put safety first, make your own checklist for new parents.

Peer support group for Latina women
Facilitated by a culturally competent Alpha staff member, this group meets to discuss pregnancy, parenting, and life stressors in the Hispanic cultural context. We share our experiences and use them as learning opportunities for ourselves and others. Join us as we chat, make friends, and help each other through the process of motherhood.

DRUG & ALCOHOL SERVICES, FAMILY SERVICES
An outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program, designed for youth ages 12-18 and their families, is available through SLO Drug and Alcohol Services. In the Youth and Family Program, families can participate in 4- 6 hours of treatment per week; this includes: group counseling, family counseling, drug education, parenting education, and multi-family sessions. Evening hours are available.
San Luis Obispo County Drug and Alcohol Services offers POEG, Perinatal Outpatient Extended Group, a treatment program for addicted women who are pregnant and/or have young children. The therapy group helps women with recovery, parenting skills, relationships and other issues.

Caring nurses can help with parenting information on: how to improve the health of newborns and children up to age 3, handling difficult parent/child relationships, teen pregnancy, babies born with low birth weight or babies who aren’t growing as they should, mother and baby exposure to tobacco, alcohol and drugs, and babies with special needs. FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE (FNL)
FNL is a place for young people to come together and make positive changes in their schools and communities. SLO County has FNL chapters at almost every high school and middle school across the county. FNL members meet regularly as a chapter at school, with an adult advisor, to plan activities that create awareness and change around alcohol, tobacco, other drug and violence issues affecting the youth of San Luis Obispo County. Friday Night Live membership is open at participating high schools and middle schools to anyone who is interested and who commits to a healthy lifestyle free from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Students have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through annual FNL youth trainings, leadership conferences and school wide youth issues conferences. FNL youth plan school and countywide events for all students to attend as positive, fun alternatives to potentially unsafe activities. Movie nights, beach clean-ups, dodgeball tournaments, Winter Socials, 24-Hour Relay Challenges and the Countywide Mock Rock are a few examples of activities that happen in FNL.

Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs which serve children from birth to age 5, pregnant women, and their families. They are child-focused programs and have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families.
The Head Start program has a long tradition of delivering comprehensive and high quality services designed to foster healthy development in low-income children. Head Start provides a range of individualized services in the areas of education and early childhood development; medical, dental, and mental health; nutrition; and parent involvement.
The Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County Head Start/Early Head Start Program makes special efforts to ensure that children with special needs are able to participate in all aspects of the program either in an inclusive home- based or preschool classroom environment. The program reserves at least 10% of its enrollment slots for children with disabilities and no child will be denied enrollment because of a disability.

Your nurse can do many things at your visit, including: weigh and measure your baby, answer common questions new parents have, help parents learn ways to help their babies be as smart as they can be, help parents deal with the stresses a new baby can bring to a family, and connect you with other resources to help your family with meeting their needs.

We’ve all experienced disagreements between family members. But when our communication breaks down and we just get stuck, there is a way to get through it all. Creative Mediation makes it easier for people to move from conflict to resoulution.
Creative Mediation, a local non-profit organization, offers a Parent-Teen mediation service that is available at a nomimal cost. Mediators are neutral facilitators who help both parents and teens understand each other’s point of view and work towards mutually agreeable solutions.

SOOTHING TOUCH INFANT MASSAGE, JAYNA TROUTMAN
This is a hands-on course for parents and caregivers to learn the art of infant massage and other types of nurturing touch techniques. Experience the profound and lifelong benefits that both parents and babies enjoy from this shared activity. Special needs babies and parents are highly encouraged to attend. Classes run for 1½ hours per week for 4 weeks with a limit of 5 babies and their parents to each class, so as to maximize individual support and parent connectivity. Morning and evening classes are available at various locations throughout SLO and the Five-Cities area. The cost for the 4 class series is $75.00.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SAP), SLO COUNTY
The SAP is a partnership between San Luis Obispo County, several local schools, and The LINK. It aims to identify troubled students so they can receive the helping services they need through a team approach. The SAP Coordinator and Family Advocate at a school site helps students who are dealing with a variety of personal problems, including those related to conflict with others, depression, anxiety, grief, recent life changes, alcohol, and drug use. SAP can help if you are concerned about your child’s reaction to the recent death of a loved one, divorce, family relocation, relationship problems, bullying or other traumatic event.
The SAP can provide individual and group counseling, student and family referrals to a variety of community resources, life skills training, interventions for at-risk behaviors, education through community and social service agencies, violence prevention strategies, and skills in decision-making and conflict resolution.

TEEN ACADEMIC PARENTING PROGRAM (T.A.P.P.)
Teen Academic Parenting Program (TAPP) promotes the well being of pregnant & parenting teens and their children in San Luis Obispo County. This is accomplished through advocacy, encouraging self-sufficiency and goal setting. Skilled professionals assess the teen’s needs and coordinate community services and resources with emphasis in the areas of: completion of high school & college enrollment, health of the parent & baby, parenting skills, identification of a support system and life skill building. Program projects include case management, support groups and Teen Parent Voices, an educational panel. The program is voluntary and there is no cost.

Are you a teen mom? Well, come and sign up for Teen Success! Teen Success is a support program for expecting or current teen moms. We will help you continue your education, maintain your current family size, and help you succeed. The Teen Success group will meet once a week. During our weekly sessions you will be given a $10 stipend and snacks! We will provide you with free child care during our group sessions. You will also receive a $100 dollar bonus every 25 weeks!

WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN (WIC) PROGRAM
The Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) is a nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well and stay healthy. WIC provides nutrition and health information, breastfeeding information and support, coupons to buy healthy foods, such as milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain bread and cereal, eggs, cheese, dry beans and peanut butter in the grocery store and referrals health care and other community services.
WIC serves women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or just had a baby and children from birth to 5 years of age (including foster children).
To be eligible for WIC families need to have a low to medium income and live in San Luis Obispo County.
WIC has offices in Atascadero, Cambria, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Nipomo, Paso Robles, and San Luis Obispo

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM-PREGNANT & PARENTING H.S. SENIORS AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTH
The WIA Youth Employment Program serves pregnant or parenting high school seniors and out of school youth including high school drop-outs ages 16-21 who reside in SLO County. The program increases educational opportunities, assists with the obtainment of a High School Diploma and GED, explores career options, leadership opportunities, and provides meaningful subsidized work experiences. In order to be eligible, youth must meet income requirements and eligibility.
