Parenting Classes

ACTIVE PARENTING, DESIGNED FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN O-5

Active Parenting classes will help you to: better understand your developing child, know what to expect at each age and stage, and effectively use a variety of discipline strategies to improve family life and decrease your stress. You will learn why children “misbehave” and how to redirect them in a loving and constructive way. The course is facilitated by Michele Gordon, Parent Connection Coordinator and Cuesta College Child Development Instructor.
Each session meets for three consecutive Friday mornings. Parents will receive a completion certificate at the end of the third class.

Fridays-May 11th, 18th, 25th
9:00a.m.-11:00a.m.
Participants should attend all three classes in the session.

COST: $15.00 for the class workbook (required to participate)
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: All parents/guardians with children ages 0 – 5 year olds are invited to attend. Childcare is not available.

You will learn positive effective discipline methods and clear communication techniques that will help your family run more smoothly. You will learn why children misbehave and how to redirect them. PARENT PARTICIPATION PROGRAM, SAN LUIS COASTAL ADULT SCHOOL

The goal of the Parent Participation Program is to enhance parenting skills through classroom discussion, interaction and observation. Parent and child attend class once a week and focus on the developmental stages of the child. Curriculum includes teacher-led discussions on parenting techniques and strategies for creating a healthy family environment. In class, parents share their challenges and successes while children enjoy age-appropriate play, circle time, and songs. Through interacting with other parents and children while participating in the classroom environment, parents gain a greater understanding of the needs and abilities of their children.

Parent Participation classes are taught by teachers holding California teaching credentials.
DATES: A year round program. Classes change quarterly. Parents may add a class at anytime on a space available basis
TIME: morning, afternoon and evening classes available
LOCATION: Classes available in San Luis Obispo, Los Osos and Morro Bay
TUITION: Prices vary. Core class is $64/10 weeks. Scholarships available for families in need.

PARENTING THE INFANT, SLCUSD ADULT SCHOOL

Through discussion and guest speakers, this class provides parents with information about infant development, safety, nutrition and sleep habits. Class time includes songs, fingerplays, sign language and homemade toys. Expectant parents are also welcome.
Parent Participation classes are taught by teachers holding California teaching credentials.
DATES/TIMES: Ongoing 10-week classes. Parents may add a class at anytime on a space available basis.
Tuesday or Thursday in San Luis Obispo, Wednesday in Morro Bay, and Friday in Los Osos.

Now we’re making friends! This class focuses on fostering learning experiences for the preschool child through art, sharing, songs, movement, play and discovery. Parent discussions include growth and development of the preschool child and positive discipline techniques.

This class focuses on parenting more than one child. Parents learn to develop caring and harmonious relationships among family members through specific topic-related discussions and activities that foster sibling bonding.

PATHWAYS TO PERMANENCE, KINSHIP CENTER

From a grandmother who took this class, “Give yourself the gift (of this class). Help is out there!”
This class is a MUST for every kin caregiver! A 21-hour specialized series of classes designed for parents, kinship caregivers, and guardians who are parenting children who have experienced trauma and loss as part of their history. The course provides tools, techniques and information that empowers participants to effectively parent their child.

SUCCESSFUL PARENTING, SPARK TRAINING

New parenting class offered by CWS for those who have had CWS involvement. Probation and court-referred parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The six class series will focus on identifying challenging behaviors in both infants & children and how you can effectively parent children with behavioral issues. Parents may start attending at any point in the 6-session series; attendance does not need to start with Session #1. Classes will focus on: nurturing a strong bond between you & your infant; how to comfort a low-threshold infant; helping your school age child succeed; effective & positive discipline.
