Do you have a family member suffering from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other serious mental illness? Do you know where to find help? Do you think enough support is available? NAMI San Luis Obispo County presents a screening and discussion of the eye-opening public television program:
Breaking the Silence: Mental Illness and the Family

NAMI SLOCO is a non-profit organization of families and friends of people with severe mental illnesses. Members provide educational and emotional support for each other and advocate for better understanding, treatment and care of people with mental illness. Extensive training is provided by NAMI for those members leading support groups and classes. NAMI SLOCO is affiliated with the NAMI California and NAMI National.

The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a 12 week course for families of individuals with severe brain disorders (mental illnesses). The course is taught by trained family members. All course materials are furnished at no cost. The curriculum focuses on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), clinical depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The course discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaches the knowledge and skills that family members need to cope more effectively.

NAMI Basics is the new signature education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. The NAMI Basics course is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or other caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years. All instruction and course materials are free to class participants. The program was developed around elements that have been extensively tested and found to be highly effective in the field, including:

  • Recognition of mental illness as a continuing traumatic event for the child and family
  • Sensitivity to the subjective emotional issues faced by family caregivers and well children in the family
  • Recognition of the need to help ameliorate the day-to-day objective burdens of care and management
  • Gaining confidence and stamina for what can be a lifelong role of family understanding and support
  • Empowerment of family caregivers as effective advocates for their children

The NAMI website offers a current schedule of classes: http://www.namislo.org/

Having a baby for the first time is a stressful and life changing event. How do you know if the things your baby is doing are normal? Is what you are doing, what a “good mom” is supposed to do? A nurse can help you feel more confident and informed about how you choose to raise your child.
Your nurse can do many things at your visit, including: weigh and measure your baby, answer common questions new parents have, help parents learn ways to help their babies be as smart as they can be, help parents deal with the stresses a new baby can bring to a family, and connect you with other resources to help your family with meeting their needs.
You must be less than 28 weeks pregnant and meet income guidelines to enroll in the First Time Mothers Program.
If interested, and for more information, please call 805-788-2068.

Parents and teens, do you disagree over curfew, friends, music, schoolwork, family responsibilities or expectations? Are you a teen who wishes your parents understood your choices? Are you a parent who wants respect from your teenager? Mediation can help!
We’ve all experienced disagreements between family members. But when our communication breaks down and we just get stuck, there is a way to get through it all. Creative Mediation makes it easier for people to move from conflict to resoulution.
Creative Mediation, a local non-profit organization, offers a Parent-Teen mediation service that is available at a nomimal cost. Mediators are neutral facilitators who help both parents and teens understand each other’s point of view and work towards mutually agreeable solutions.
If you are feeling the pain of conflict, mediation is a way to begin positive change. For more information about the program or to schedule a mediation session, contact:

Workshops that educate on the importance of mate selection (choosing the other parent for your children); teach participants to recognize the “red flags” of an unhealthy relationship and to identify the hallmarks of a responsible mate. Anyone who has gone through the agony of splitting up when children are involved can attest to the pain and suffering it creates. Partnership for Responsible Parenting (PRP) believes mate selection education can and will mitigate the number of divorces and children born out of wedlock. Through guided discussion, participants identify how to make better relationship choices that will improve their lives as well as their children’s. If you want to help your clients become better parents or better prepared for parenthood, give us a call and schedule a workshop.

Services Affirming Family Empowerment:
Our goals are to focus on family strengths and to coordinate community resources to keep children: SAFE, HEALTHY, AT HOME, IN SCHOOL and OUT OF TROUBLE.
SAFE is a community based, school-linked, family-centered way of delivering and coordinating appropriate services to children and families in San Luis Obispo County. The SAFE services team includes the family and their natural supports in planning and implementing actions that build on family strengths and resources. Prevention and early intervention are always preferred. For those families with more immediate or severe problems, or families that need help with the coordination of services, the SAFE team links families to services and provides case management.
Another unique aspect of SAFE services is the employment of bilingual, bicultural Family Advocates to directly assist families by providing parenting education and support, translation services, connection with community resources, and case management.
