FINDING THE RIGHT MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST
Finding the right mental health therapist for your child can be challenging. You want to find a therapist who has experience working with young children and with whom you and your child are comfortable. It is important to ask questions and listen carefully to the answers to make sure that any therapist who may work with your child has the training and experience to effectively provide help. It is helpful to schedule a phone interview or a brief meeting to “interview” the therapist prior to your child’s first visit.

Parent Connection does not endorse the mental health therapists listed. The information is provided to assist parents in their search for support services that are appropriate for their family’s needs.
A note to SLO Therapists: If you are interested in being included on the list, please send your name, location, contact information (website), and specialization to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Play Therapy: Play therapy is used to provide children with a voice to make sense and meaning out of their world. It can be a tool for understanding behaviors and for diagnosis, but it can also be a way of helping children work through trauma and other difficult life experiences. Because children develop cognitive skills before language skills, play is an effective way to understand a child.
